ICDP is an International Continental Scientific Drilling Program that was officially founded in 1996 by the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Chinese Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources and the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology /GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ).
Starting with a first ICDP co-financed drilling campaign on the Lake Baikal in 1998, the organization has been helping to carry out close to 70 different projects.

The ICDP mission
With the goal of a wise management of the planet’s natural resources, ICDP promotes the use of scientific drilling as a tool to address a large range of scientific research themes and the development of projects to better understand processes acting in the Earth’s lithosphere and their links with biosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere.

ICDP plays its own role in

  1. obtaining funding for the implementation of projects,
  2. identifying drilling sites,
  3. providing technical support for drilling projects,
  4. ensuring appropriate monitoring of projects and publications of research results and data.
